Reports: Seven Set To Bring Back Big Brother As It Desperately Chases Younger Eyeballs

Social media was abuzz yesterday with reports Big Brother will be hitting Australia’s TV screens in 2020. And now, there are reports it’s Channel Seven who will be reviving the long-lost reality show.

Yesterday B&T reported Seven had axed its Sunday Night current affairs program – with the loss of almost 40 jobs – as Seven West media continues a significant restructure of its executive team under new CEO James Warburton, according to reports in The Australian.

And now industry blog TV Blackbox has reported Seven is making another sweeping change to its 2020 TV lineup, adding Endemol Shine’s Big Brother to its list of programs as it desperately tries to chase a younger, more advertising-friendly audience.

When former CEO Tim Worner was abruptly shown the door in mid-August one of the chief reasons given was his inability to attract younger viewers to the network. Of the three commercial networks, Seven is said to have the oldest audience demographic.

B&T reached out to Seven, who declined to comment on the Big Brother speculation.

It would make sense, however, following the axing of its leading investigate current affairs show Sunday Night, with Warburton making room in the budget to run the reality TV show in a primetime slot for live eviction shows.

The rumour mill also suggested both 10 and Nine passed on the opportunity, with both networks having run the show in the past.

Network 10 launched the program in Australia in 2001, running for eight seasons and dominating ratings. Channel 9 then picked up the program but dropped it from its channel in 2014.
