Qantas Reconsiders Wallabies Sponsorship After Player’s Homophobic Comments

Qantas is reportedly re-evaluating its sponsorship of the Wallabies following homophobic statements from player Israel Folau.

Folau made the statements in the comments section of his own Instagram post.

As a response to the post, which features a comic related to religion, one of Folau’s followers asked the star player, “What was god plans for gay people?”

To which Folau responded, “HELL… Unless they repent of their sins and turn to god”.

The comment has been deleted, however, screen grabs of the exchange have been widely circulated via social media.

Qantas has since gotten wind of the homophobic comments and has released a statement condemning his actions.

As a sponsor of Rugby Australia, we’re supportive of their approach towards tolerance and inclusion, which aligns with our own.

We’ve made it clear to Rugby Australia that we find the comments very disappointing.

While there has been no confirmation as of yet whether Qantas will withdraw sponsorship from the Wallabies, media outlets have reported executives from the airline will no longer tolerate non-inclusive comments of any nature.

Rugby Australia chief executive Raelene Castle has also commented on the incident.

“Israel’s comment reflects his personal religious beliefs, however, it does not represent the view of Rugby Australia or NSW Rugby,’’ she said.

“We are aligned in our view that rugby is a game for all, regardless of sexuality, race, religion or gender, which is clearly articulated in rugby’s inclusion policy.

“We understand that Israel’s comment has upset a number of people and we will discuss the matter with him as soon as possible.’’
