Google Rejigs Algorithms To Give Original News Stories A Boost

Google Rejigs Algorithms To Give Original News Stories A Boost

Original news stories will be given greater recognition under the latest changes to the Google Search function.

The changes will see the ‘search rater guidelines’ updated to better understand the importance of original reporting and give readers the opportunity to find the story “that started it all” when researching a news story.

“In today’s fast-paced world of news, the original reporting on a subject doesn’t always stay in the spotlight for long,” said Google News VP Richard Gingras.

“Many news articles, investigations, exclusive interviews or other work can be so notable that they generate interest and follow-up coverage from other publications.”

Investigative pieces will be particularly rewarded, said Google.

The announcement comes after News Corp recently revealed its plans to promote news coverage from local and smaller publications with news aggregation service ‘Knewz’.

Google also said it has changed the guidelines for the 10,000 ‘raters’ around the world that evaluate work to help improve algorithms.

Raters are asked to rank the reputation of different publishers across the web. These people will now be asked to include additional factors, like whether or not the publication has won any awards, when assessing its integrity.

“Many other kinds of websites have reputations as well,” Google’s guidelines now say.

“For example, you might find that a newspaper (with an associated website) has won journalistic awards. Prestigious awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize award, or a history of high quality original reporting are strong evidence of positive reputation.”
