Amazon Australia will no doubt be hailing Prime Day 2019 as a raging success, after it was revealed the event drove enormous growth to sales and traffic in the local market.

Competitive intelligence company Hitwise is reporting visits and transactions grew by over 50 per cent on the Amazon Australia site during the sale last week.

Total visits to the Amazon Australia site reached 2.7 million – up 72.4 per cent year-on-year – while the total transaction figure was 167,600, representing 50.4 per cent annual growth.

“After an underwhelming launch in December 2017, Amazon has had another shot at Australia this year,” said Hitwise.

“Initial Prime Day figures show that activity has finally shifted to their local site, with visitors and buyers rising by +50 per cent YoY.

“Conversion rates have dropped from 7.2 per cent to 6.3 per cent, indicating that more browsing behaviours are now occurring on Amazon’s local site.”

12,600 Australians signed up to Amazon Prime during the week, although Hitwise did not state how many of these sign-ups were free trials.

Despite being one of the most powerful businesses in the world, it appears Amazon even outperformed market expectations this Prime Day.

Retail Doctor Group founder and CEO Brian Walker told Business Insider he expected Prime Day to see a year-on-year increase in customers of just 15 per cent in Australia this year.

Walker also tipped Amazon Australia to make around $2.8 million in revenue from the event, but with Hitwise suggesting total transactions reached 167,600, one would expect to see the total revenue significantly higher.
