The Newspaper Works Welcomes Peter Greste Release

The Newspaper Works has welcomed the long-awaited release of Australian journalist Peter Greste who works for Al Jazeera and has spent 400 days in an Egyptian jail.

The Newspaper Works CEO Mark Hollands said: “We are pleased and relieved for both Peter and his family that he has been released from his unjust imprisonment, however, we, like Al Jazeera, urge the Egyptian Government to now release Peter’s colleagues, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy.

“All actions by any government designed to restrict press freedom and the public’s right to know should and must be fought.”

Peter Greste and his colleagues, Canadian-Egyptian bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian producer Baher Mohamed, work for the Qatar-based Al Jazeera English, and were sentenced to between seven and 10 years for purportedly aiding the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood Group.

“Around the world, journalists are subjected to threats of violence, jail sentences and are even killed for the pursuit of truth,” Hollands said. “The jailing of Mr Greste and his colleagues demonstrates the dangers and sacrifices journalists are called upon to make.”
