Monday TV Wrap: Last Night’s Q&A Labelled “Train Wreck TV”, But Scores Serious Viewer Jolt

Q&A’s decision to host controversial Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson last night proved a ratings winner, as the ABC’s weekly gabfest enjoyed some of its best numbers in some time.

Joining Peterson on last night’s panel were transgender activist Catherine McGregor, Liberal MP Alex Hawke, Labor MP Terri Butler and Twitter “Queen” Van Badham, with some 429,000 viewers tuning in according to OzTAM five city metro numbers.

However, the panel and the episode have been largely panned by the media this morning. The Sydney Morning Herald reviewer, Neil McMahon, describing it as a “train wreck TV” and a “nationally televised support group for attention seekers, a gang who still managed to end the program feeling nearly 90 minutes of airtime wasn’t enough to fully encompass their genius.”

The ABC’s Monday night of current affairs – 7pm news (778,000), Four Corners (514,000) and Media Watch (508,000) – helped Aunty to 18.5 per cent audience share last night.

Yet again, Nine won the night on the back of MAFS that pulled 1.29 million (a drop of 370,000 from Sunday evening).

Nine took home 32.9 per cent of the audience eyeballs, Seven had 26.5 per cent, 10 had 18.5 per cent and SBS posted 5.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, MKR had to settle for 764,000 and 10’s Dancing With The Stars – that saw Miguel Maestre given the boot – tangoed to 588,000.

Other highlights for Nine included its 6pm news (944,000), ACA (883,000), Bad Mothers (644,000), Hot Seat (484,000) and Botched (213,000).

Seven’s night went thus: 6pm news (986,000), Home And Away (642,000), The Chase (560,000) and Instant Hotel (276,000).

Dancing aside, 10’s best was The Project (448,000), 10 News First (404,000), The Graham Norton Show (203,000) and Pointless (195,000).

While for SBS, its best was The Kennedys with 196,000.
