Media Commentator Jane Caro Considers Challenging Tony Abbott’s Seat

Writer and media commentator Jane Caro is considering running against former prime minister Tony Abbott for the seat of Warringah in the next election.

The news follows Kerryn Phelp’s likely Wentworth win on Saturday, which has been a safe Liberal seat for 87 years.

Caro was tweeted at by a Twitter user following a post from Charlie Pickering which said: “If I were a high-profile independent living in Warringah and considering a career in politics, I’d be booking some headshots right about now. #WentworthVotes”

After being called out, Caro responded: “Grew up there. Went to school there. Sent kids to school there. Live in neighbouring electorate. Anyone interested? Get in touch.”

She later added, “I may not win. Not the point. I feel duty bound to do what I can to stop the climate deniers & the far right destroy my grandchildren’s future. If I could help I ought to at least try.”

When asked why she would consider running, Caro said: “The sense of urgency that I feel is felt by a great many people.

“Particularly climate change is concentrating people’s mind.

“Warringah has an awful lot of coast and people there are very much part of enjoying and experiencing and understanding the environment and how it’s changing.”

“I am opposed to Manus and Nauru and would want them closed and all the refugees brought to Australia from those awful places,” she said.

“I am ashamed of what Australia has been doing. You cannot use human beings as a deterrent.”

The independent for New England Tony Windsor threw his full support behind Caro.
