McDonald’s Launches Happy Meal That Doubles As VR Headset

McDonald’s has launched a promotion which turns Happy Meal boxes into virtual reality (VR) headsets. The ‘Happy Goggles’ will be available in 14 restaurants across Sweden with plans to roll the VR headset out globally “soon”.

To kick off McDonald’s move into virtual reality, the fast food chain has developed a ski game called “Se Upp I Backen” (Watch Out On The Slopes) and its aim is to help kids understand the need to be alert on the slopes and avoid obstacles – including other skiers.

To turn the iconic red boxes into Happy Goggles: All you need to do is get a limited edition Happy Meal box and then fold it – following the instructions on the box. Tear along the perforated lines and fold, inserting the VR lenses (included) and a smartphone.

Jeff Jackett, marketing director at McDonald’s Sweden said: “We want to continue being the best family restaurant in Sweden. The Happy Meal is one of our most loved menus and therefore an appropriate platform for reaching out to our family customers through experiences that focus on play and learning. We believe that many people will enjoy the fun skiing game with the new Happy Goggles.”

According to McDonald’s Happy Goggle site: “It’s our mission to ensure that the World’s most famous box will continue to be magical and relevant to families for another 30 years. The Happy Meal simply must move with the times. But evolution doesn’t always mean radical change. For us it meant a bit of ripping, folding and sliding. Meet Happy Goggles – a unique VR viewer made from an ordinary Happy Meal box.”

McDonald’s Australia has also launched a limited edition Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry to celebrate Easter.
