Maroons Fan’s #RiseForCameron Sign Causes State Of Origin Uproar

A Queensland supporter held up a #riseforcameron banner last night during State Of Origin, the banner has been widely criticised for being insensitive towards quadriplegic player Alex MacKinnon.

McKinnon was 22 when the Newcastle Knights player was dumped on his dead during a game against Melbourne Storm. He was paralysed and is now a quadriplegic. After the accident, the hashtag #riseforalex trended nationwide.

During a recent 60 Minutes interview with McKinnon accused Melbourne Storm captain and QLD captain Cameron Smith of being insensitive after the tackle and arguing with the referee about the penalty call.

“You see someone with two, four, six, eight, nine people around them and you want to debate about a f—ng penalty?” McKinnon said as he watches the game during the 60 Minutes interview. “Is he still debating? Is he f—ing serious? Wouldn’t you just shut up? It’s f—ing ridiculous.”

The hashtag #riseforcameron is a deliberate dig at what McKinnon said during the interview and the #riseforalex hashtag.

Twitter erupted after the tacky banner was broadcasted during the game.
