Latest Vogue Issue Showcases Female Aussie Rugby Legends

Vogue Australia’s latest issue, which hits the stands this week, has shone a well deserved spotlight on the women who led the Australian women’s rugby team to gold in Rio this year.

Ahead of the Sydney Sevens Tournament, kicking off on February 3, the Australian Women’s Sevens took on a different challenge from their sporting endeavours, posing for a photo spread on Maroubra Beach in Sydney.

The Women’s Sevens program has been on the rise since the girls snagged gold in Rio, which also saw them score the AIS Sport Performance Awards Team of The Year in December last year. Many media outlets have since labelled them the ‘hottest property in women’s sport’, and Vogue was quick to jump on the bandwagon.

The shoot features co-captains Sharni Williams and Shannon Parry, alongside teammates Charlotte Caslick, Emma Tonegato, Chloe Dalton, Emilee Cherry and Alicia Quirk.

“I think you always dream about becoming a world or an Olympic Champion, but being in Vogue Magazine is just a bit surreal!” Cherry said.

“It was a cool experience doing the shoot at Maroubra beach and all of the team at Vogue Magazine were incredible to work with.

“It is a new space for us (Vogue Magazine), so hopefully a new audience will be exposed to our sport and culture within our group – who knows the next Shannon Parry or Charlotte Caslick could be reading this article!

“As a team we’re all behind the concept of leaving the sport in a better place than when we first came together and I think it’s fair to say this type of exposure is part of that.”

Vogue editor Edwina McCann, in her editor’s letter, added, “The extraordinary women in the Rugby Sevens team love life, are performing at their best and winning.

“I first met some of the Olympic gold medallists last year at the Sydney Sevens tournament. With this year’s tournament around the corner, we celebrate the team and explore the secret to their success in what was a completely male-dominated sport.”

The girls will feature inside the latest Vogue Australia issue, with cover girl Amanda Seyfried:
