Study: Instagram Has Sent Wedding Costs Up 50%

A new British study has found the average price of a wedding has risen 50 per cent in the past five years and the cause? Instagram.

The National Wedding Survey 2019 found a wedding today sets back newly-weds around £31,974 ($AU57,000), up from £20,799 ($AU37,000) in 2014.

“With social media at our fingertips 24/7, it’s no surprise that brides and grooms are feeling the pressure to have Insta-worthy weddings,” the study said.

“Some 42 per cent of you said you felt under pressure to have a ‘Pinterest’ or ‘Instagram’ wedding and a quarter said they’d even spent more budget on making their day look nicer.”

The pressure to create a wedding fit for Instagram resulted in couples spending 30 per cent more than anticipated on the event, the study found.

Destination weddings are proving particularly costly for couples, as the trend to take festivities offshore continues in search of “Instagrammable spots”.

It also found social media is now playing a big role throughout the entire wedding process.

One in 10 couples announced their engagement via social media within an hour of the proposal, while one third did within 24 hours.
