Google Paid Former Exec Nearly $50M In Exit Fees Following Sexual Harassment Claim

Google has paid former exec, Amit Singhal, a near $50M exit package payout after he was allegedly forced to resign after a sexual assault claim.

Details of the exit package have been revealed as part of a shareholder lawsuit against Google, which came off the back of a published report of payouts Google made to execs who had been accused of sexual harassment.

Targeting the board of Google parent Alphabet, the lawsuit claims its member had a responsibility to protect the company and its shareholders from any risk or reputation harm.

Court documents revealed that instead, the board agreed to payout the male execs facing sexual harassment charges, which in turn opened Google to reputational and financial damage.

On Monday, previously redacted sections of the lawsuit were made available, which included quotes from Alphabet board committee meetings.

A section of the minutes showed Singhal, a senior VP of Google search who left the company in 2016, was paid two $21 million payments, and payment between $7 million to $21 million as part of his resignation agreement.

Google has acknowledged the unredacted claims in the lawsuit and said in a statement there were “serious consequences for anyone who behaves inappropriately at Google.

“In recent years, we’ve made many changes to our workplace and taken an increasingly hard line on inappropriate conduct by people in positions of authority”.

Singhal was a subject of a New York Times investigation last year that revealed Google paid Android creator Andy Rubin a $127 million severance package after the company discovered sexual assault allegations against him were true, claims which Rubin denied.

Singhal also denied the claims made against him and that he left Google on his own terms.

Mr Singhal also denied the claims against him, saying in a statement to the AP in 2017 that he had not been accused of harassment before and that he left Google on his own terms.
