Facebook Rolls Out Live Streaming, Only For Celebrities

BELCHATOW, POLAND - APRIL 06, 2014: Facebook application on smart phone screen.

Social media giant Facebook has launched a live streaming offering, but only for famous people.

The streaming system lets celebrities connect more with their fanbase.

The service has been likened to two other live video apps; Meerkat and Periscope. Both offerings had previously been celebrated as being a brilliant new option brands should get amongst.

Facebook’s product manager, Vadim Lavrusik, announced the new offering of Live on Facebook’s newsroom.

“Today, we’re excited to introduce Live, a new way for public figures to share live video from Mentions with their fans on Facebook,” he wrote.

“With Live, public figures can take fans behind the scenes, host a Q&A, share announcements, and more — all in real time.”

The way it works:

Celebrities with a verified page and Facebook Mentions enabled – a function launched July last year to help celebs connect more with fans – have the option to use the video service Live.

Not everyone can use the function, it’s only celebs with a verified page.

Celebs tap on the post function on Facebook and hit the Live Video button – add a description and then ‘go live’ when ready.

Lavrusik explained when live recording celebs can see how many people are viewing the content and respond to comments then and there.

Once finished, obviously press stop.

The video is then saved to the Facebook page for fans to view later.

The option allows celebs to grow and engage with their fan base, interact directly with fans and other public figures, and keep videos for fans to view after.

One of the first Aussie celebs to have a shot at live video is Delta Goodrem, judge on reality singing competition The Voice and singer herself.

Goodrem will use the platform to celebrate the release of her new single ‘Wings’, hosting a live Q&A broadcast during The Voice tomorrow.
