Dolce & Gabbana Debuts Line Of Hijabs And Abayas

Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has launched its first line of hijabs and abayas. The collection features 14 looks in a black and beige color palette, with black and white lace and the fashion house’s signature daisies, lemons, and lush red roses.

The fashion line was launched exclusive on Style.com (Arabia) over the weekend. The website described the collection as “rife with special occasion overlays to be worn to celebrate the inimitable dolce vita that is distinct to us in the Arab world”.

During last year’s ready-to-wear collection Stefano Gabbana, the co-founder of Dolce & Gabbana, said “I’m really fascinated with the Middle East and we’ve just completed a prêt-a-porter collection of abayas and sheylas. The pieces have some lace, embroidery and some prints – but not too much.”

The fashion house is just one of a handful of brands increasing their presence in the Middle East. Last year, H&M featured a Muslim model and style blogger Mariah Idrissi in their “Close the Loop” campaign.

Idrissi, 23, is a Londoner of Pakistani and Moroccan heritage with over 4,000 Instagram followers. She told Fusion News about her experience: “Hijab fashion has boomed in the last few years and to finally see a hijabi [a woman who wears a hijab] in mainstream fashion is a big achievement.”
