ABC Stands By Yassmin Abdel-Magied As Petition For Her Sacking Hits 27,000

The ABC is standing by Muslim activist, broadcaster and Q&A panelist Yassmin Abdel-Magied after a petition called for her sacking after her controversial comments supporting Sharia Law on the Q&A program last week.

The online petition, which started on Monday, has thus far garnered 27,000 signatures and has called for Abdel-Magied to be stood down from both Q&A and as a presenter on teh ABC’s Australia Wide.

However, in a statement to media, the ABC has shown their support for Abdel-Magied: “In addition to her ABC role, Yassmin Abdel-Magied engages in a number of other activities in her capacity as a writer, commentator and engineer. We stand by her right to appear on Q&A and share with the wider community her personal views in this capacity.

“As the ABC stated last week: ‘Q&A is designed to provide a forum for opposing viewpoints to be robustly discussed and debated. Some viewpoints aired may challenge the audience some of the time, especially when controversial and emotive issues are being discussed, but Q&A never sets out to gratuitously offend.’”
