More than 30 regional Fairfax titles could close

More than 30 regional Fairfax newspaper titles could see closing curtains, according to The Australian.

The report outlines how 33 regional titles such as the Illawarra Mercury and The Port Macquarie Express are currently under review.

Two consultancy reports commissioned by Fairfax, with one from Bain & Co identifying 33 regional newspapers on a “watch list” and the other from US consultancy firm McKinsey and Company suggesting 65 Fairfax titles should close, the Murdoch broadsheet is reporting.

A spokesperson for Fairfax said: “We announced that we were reviewing the structures of the regional business last year. We have made no decisions. It’s business as usual.”

Fairfax declined to comment.

Fairfax came under fire last week after the announcement up to 70 editorial jobs could be scrapped, with Sydney and Melbourne journos voting to go on a 24 hour strike in response.

Fairfax issued a statement following the strike saying it was “disappointed” that its journalists felt the need to participate in the “unlawful action”.
