MasterChef recovers and The Block takes top spot but Seven maintains ratings throne

Australians were glued to their couches last night as a blockbluster line-up pushed all top 10 shows above the magic million mark.

The Block ruled Sunday evening with 1.572 million viewers overall while also leading the important 16-39 and 18-49 demographics, according to OzTam’s preliminary metro ratings.

Ten’s MasterChef: The Professionals recovered on its final evening with 1.022 million viewers tuning in to see Rhys Badcock take home the title.

The finale of MasterChef was also the second most watched program among the 16-39 and 18-49 demos.

Ten’s return to the top 10 with MasterChef and the Formula One, which took fourth place with 1.226 million viewers, boosted the network’s share of all viewers to 17.8%.

The result is Ten’s best for a number of weeks and pushed the commercial network ahead of the ABC which had a 13.3% share.

The launch of Ten’s The Biggest Loser: The Next Generation at 6.45pm last night did struggle against The Block and Seven’s Sunday Night (1.082 million).

The reality competition sat in 17th place with an audience of 815,000 viewers. It was the seventh most watched program in the 16-39 demo and sixth among 18-49s.

Downton Abbey led Seven’s dominance of the top 10 programs with an audience of 1.28 million viewers in second place behind The Block.

Seven took more top 10 slots than any other network, with The Force (1.185 million), Seven News (1.153 million), Sunday Night and Border Security (1.017 million) all performing well.

As a result, Seven maintained its higher share of all free-to-air viewers with 22.4%.

Nine was hot on Seven’s heels with a 21% share.

SBS took a 3.1% share.
