Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight Largest Pay-Per-View Event In History

Sunday’s “fight of the century” between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is reported to have been the largest pay-per-view event in US history.

Although final audience numbers are yet to be finalised both in the US and globally, US’s Deadline.com is reporting that the two cable networks who offered the fight in the US – HBO/Showtime and Hollywood Big Ringside – had netted over $US400 million in subscriber revenues.

Both channels have reported that three million individual Americans bought a subscription from either of the two networks and have subsequently bragged that the revenues raised from the fight are bigger than the GDP of 24 countries.

The biggest pay-per-view event previous to this one was Mayweather’s fight with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 that generated 2.5 million buys.

Although final global revenues from the fight are yet to be determined, it’s been reported that the two fighters will share a final purse of around $US300 million primarily based on global TV subscriptions.

Sunday’s fight – won by Mayweather – also topped the Nielsen Twitter TV ratings with 5.8 million event-related tweets in the US.

It’s estimated that 11.6 million Americans watched the fight which was no mean feat considering it also came up against the Kentucky Derby, the NFL Draft and both the NBA and NHL playoffs.
