Adidas Creates Cool Trainer Made Solely From Ocean Trash

Here at the B&T office can you grow a little sceptical of the latest brands jumping on the latest causes. But when we heard adidas had manufactured a new trainer made solely of ocean trash then it made us almost want to go to the gym. And we must stress almost.

You heard that right – a sneaker made solely from the mountains of plastic trash awash the world’s oceans and lost or disused fishing nets.

The German sportswear manufacturer has teamed-up with an environmental protection group known as Parley. All the trash was collected by anti-whaling boat The Sea Shepherd while it was tracking illegal fishing boats off the coast of West Africa.

The initial shoe is a mere prototype and there are reports adidas plans to radically expand its ocean trash range later in the year. Adidas has partnered with Parley and the UN to draw greater attention to the dire sate of the planet’s oceans and the new trainer is just one idea being put forward.

“At Parley for the Oceans, we want to establish the oceans as a fundamental part of the debate around climate change,” Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans said. “Our objective is to boost public awareness and to inspire new collaborations that can contribute to protect and preserve the oceans. We are extremely proud that adidas is joining us in this mission and is putting its creative force behind this partnership to show that it is possible to turn ocean plastic into something cool.”
