Manila Shopping Centre Introduces Bike-Friendly Dining Amidst COVID-19 ‘Bike Boom’

The Lucky Chinatown Mall in Manila announced in early march their ‘Bike and Bite’ concept, where cyclists can go for food in the centre without worrying about their bike getting stolen.

Cyclists visiting the shopping center can now park behind tables, which also serve as bike racks, in the dining area.

A Facebook post by the shopping centre read, “#NowIsAGoodTime to pedal your way to #LuckyChinatown. With Bike and Bite, you can now conveniently park your bike as you savor the best of Asian cuisine’.

The picture gallery attached shows diners parked at their tables while they eat.

COVID-19 has seen bike usage swelling in the Phillipines. In August, the boom lead to the Department of Transportation announcing their intention to build a Manila-wide bike lane network.

More generally, there has been a ‘bike boom’ globally. By June in the UK, 20,000 bikes waiting manufacture and delivry had been reserved or bought, according the Association of Cycle Traders.

In Australia, bike retailer Byron Thomas from 99 Bikes Brookvale told SBS News that bike sales in April 2020 had increased by 28 per cent in comparison to December 2019.

The City of Melbourne also announced in December 2020 that it would install 100 kilometres of bike routes across key inner-Melbourne suburbs.
