KFC has teamed up with Russian scientists to created 3D, lab-made chicken nuggets.

The global chain will work with Russian company 3D Bioprinting Solutions to develop bioprinting technology that will “print” chicken meat, using chicken cells and plant material.

KFC will use the bioprinting firm with ingredients like breading and spices “to achieve the signature KFC taste” attempting to recreate the taste and texture of genuine chicken.

While it might sound like something out of a movie, according to A Current Affair, plenty of KFC consumers wouldn’t have an issue eating lab-made chicken.

“If it tasted the same, what’s the difference?” one KFC customer said.

Said another: “You wouldn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell.”

Bioprinted nuggets would be more environmentally friendly to produce than standard chicken meat, said KFC. They cited a study by the American Environmental Science and Technology Journal which shows the benefits of growing meat from cells, including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption compared to traditional farming methods.

KFC Australia told A Current Affair there were no changes planned for nuggets down under, however.
