New South Wales state correspondent

We are seeking a New South Wales state correspondent to join our newsroom in Sydney.

Guardian Australia (www.theguardian.com/au) launched in May 2013 as part of Guardian News & Media (GNM), one of the largest English language newspaper websites in the world (www.theguardian.com).

We are seeking a New South Wales state correspondent to join our newsroom in Sydney.

The New South Wales state correspondent will lead coverage of NSW news with a strong emphasis on state politics and liaise with the newsdesk and state news editor to prioritise a news agenda for a NSW geo-located container on Guardian Australia’s site. This role will be required to write daily breaking news stories on state issues and explain, analyse and give context to NSW stories for Guardian Australia’s readers in NSW and other states.

This role will suit an experienced journalist with demonstrated experience in initiating and researching original and impactful NSW news stories, investigations and features, and a track record in covering NSW state politics.

The successful candidate will also have demonstrated news-breaking and investigative experience, the ability to work with editors on planning coverage, a good understanding of media law, familiarity and ease with social media, and the ability to direct more junior reporters.

For more information please view the full job description here.

To apply for this position, please upload your résumé (maximum three pages) plus covering letter as one document by following this link.

In your covering letter please outline your motivation for applying for the role, why you think you are suitable and why you are looking to leave or have left your current/past position.

This role is being offered on a full-time, 12-month contract, working over a seven-day roster with early starts or late finishes.

Closing date for applications: 20 October 2021.

If you require an adjustment to be made during the recruitment process, please email australia.hr@theguardian.com

We believe that our role in the Australian media is to give a voice to the most marginalised people in society and value and respect all differences in all people — including people of colour, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from different social classes and people with disabilities (seen and unseen). We believe that these communities must be centred in the work we do, bringing a new perspective and a diversity of thought. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities and/or marginalised groups.
