A long-term listener of youth station Triple j has been jailed for fives years after sending emails to the station threatening to kill and rape staff, including on-air talent and sales staff at ABC stores.
Forty-year-old Melbourne man Nicholas John Williams was sentenced to five years’ jail with a non-parole period of three years after pleading guilty to the charges in the Victorian County Court last month.
It is understood that Williams has a long history of mental illness and already had a number of serious convictions as well as having served time in prison.
Fairfax Media is today reporting that Williams, a long-term fan of the station, became furious when he wasn’t invited to Triple J’s 40th birthday celebrations last year. He then began demanding large sums of money, making threats to rape and stab staff, including threats against an on-air presenter’s daughter.
As well as extortion with threats to kill and inflict injury, Williams pleaded guilty to a charge of using a carriage service to menace, harass, cause offence.
