Instagram Gives Novak Djokovic’s Wife ‘False Information’ Label Over 5G Post

Instagram has marked a post shared by Jelena Djokovic – wife of tennis player Novak Djokovic – as ‘false information’, after it appeared to link 5G networks and coronavirus.

Djokovic shared the 10-minute video to her 500,000 followers early this week, which showed an American physician discussing a conspiracy theory connecting the COVID-19 outbreak with 5G technology.

“What are your Coronavirus thoughts?” she captioned the video. “Lots of videos going around these days debating the current situation with the #Coronavirus, causes, cures, prevention… Whoever has time, please check this one out and let me know your thoughts. Does anyone recognize who this guy is? Kisses and love.”

Instagram, which has been working to stamp out misinformation around the COVID-19 outbreak, was quick to take action to ensure the video was not given legitimacy.

The video now displays a warning before it can be played.

“False Information,” the video is now labelled. “Reviewed by independent fact-checkers.”

In a statement shared by Essentially Sports, Djokovic defended her decision to post the video.

“I’m not claiming to be true or not, but I’m certainly interested in learning and getting informed about it,” she said.

The video has not been taken down and has now been viewed over 100,000 times.

It follows controversial comments made by Djokovic’s husband Novak earlier this week about the possibility of vaccinating pro tennis players against COVID-19, should a vaccine become available.

“Personally I am opposed to vaccination and I wouldn’t want to be forced by someone to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel,” Djokovic said.

“But if it becomes compulsory, what will happen? I will have to make a decision.”
