Huawei is clearly concerned about people misspelling its name, trademarking almost every possible variant with IP Australia.

The Chinese telco has faced trying times in Australia of late, after it was banned from providing equipment for the 5G network.

But the company is obviously still interested in the Australian market, doubling down on trademarking its name.

The Sydney Morning Herald revealed Huawei Technologies Co lodged had for trademarks covering the terms Huawy, Wuawe and Huawii among 70 other pending applications with IP Australia recently.

The company has more than 250 approved trademarks in Australia.

In a statement, the company said it is common practice for brands to trademark possible misspellings, such as Google registering ‘Gooogle’.

But the company is beginning to gain a reputation for using trademarking as a tool in markets outside of China, some of which it is widely scrutinised.

In the United States, Huawei recently attempted to trademark its own operating system under “Hongmeng” after President Donald Trump’s (now relaxed) ban on the company.

At the time it was believed the company was filing for the trademark as a way to sidestep the looming ban.
