Guardian Australia has made new appointments in two new states. Nikki Mercado joins as account director in Western Australia and Sophie George joins as a state sales manager in Queensland.

With a focus on breaking news, investigative journalism, podcasts and deep content partnerships with Australia’s largest advertisers, Guardian Australia has grown from strength to strength over the last three years, and the hires are reflective of this position.

Mercado has over 14 years’ experience holding several roles within the industry working overseas in Malaysia at Yahoo! and recently at REA and rent.com.au in Australia.

George has over 22 years of media experience notably working in the UK and Australia at the Daily Mail across news, automotive and consumer brands in print, digital and commercial partnerships. She also founded Mums of Media to support industry women on maternity leave.

Sophie, said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be able to offer agencies and clients a counterweight to traditional journalism in Queensland.

“We’re looking forward to sharing our ‘Power of Purpose’ research with the industry over the coming months and help Queensland businesses leverage their own purpose agenda.”

Mercado said: “I am so excited to represent Guardian Australia, a brand whose values I support and share. There is so much growth opportunity in such a unique market like we have in W.A.”

Commercial director at The Guardian, Mason Rook, said:  “I’m excited to welcome both Sophie and Nikki to the team, they both have amazing track records developing sales and partnership initiatives for their clients.

“Their roles are a critical part of our national expansion ensuring we have dedicated teams on the ground to continue to build upon our advertising and audience success giving advertisers in those markets the opportunity to work with the largest mass media, purpose-driven organisation in the world.”
