Sports stars and their coaches are often criticised for giving dull, formulaic and clichéd TV interviews, typically done so they don’t upset fans, other players and, most importantly, the many sponsors.
So it’s hats off to the coach of English fifth division football team Aldershot Town, Mark Molesley, for delivering one of the more unique sports interviews in recent times.
Molesley was being interviewed prior to kick-off at a home against Bromley over the weekend when he was asked by a journalist the fairly typical anodyne sports question: “What are your thoughts ahead of the game?”
It’s here the 40-year-old coach unleashed in spectacular fashion.
“Does a penguin get cold? What way does your bath water go, clockwise or anti-clockwise when you pull the plug out? You know, these are questions that are going to be asked of us and the questions we need the answers to,” Molesley quipped.
“We’re always looking for solutions and need to solve the equation sometimes.”
He then moved on to a more pressing issue – haircuts of the team’s players.
“Sam’s had a lovely haircut, it’s started to grow out now. Coops is here now, working silently away. Robbie’s over there, the first time he’s been quiet today.
“Terry’s brought a briefcase in. He’s got four Japanese talking dogs in there. This is what we work with and we’ll continue to work hard.”
Fans quickly took to social media to express their delight in Molesley’s work, fast comparing him to the great David Brent.
