Nomadland might have won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, but it was an emotive piece of creative from Google that stole the show (at least in terms of the ads).
‘A CODA Story’ shares the story of Google’s lead designer at Google brand Studio Tony Lee, who was born a CODA – child of deaf adults.
The 90-second ad talks about Lee’s experience growing up with deaf parents.
It also looks at how Lee and his family have managed being physically separated during the COVID-19 pandemic and how his parents are adjusting to their new role as grandparents.
Keeping the family connected has been the Live Caption function on Google Meet, which is shown in action during the spot.
You can watch it here.
The ad, which already has over 1.5 million views on YouTube, has drawn applause from social media users who can relate to the story.

This is awesome and heart-warming!! Thank you, Google! As a deaf individual myself, I rely heavily on my Google Voice phone number thanks to the free transcription of voice mail messages. It’s a lifesaver. Google is the only company that offers free transcripts. Thank you!!! <3
