Fairfax’s Good Weekend Editor Ben Naparstek Jumps Ship To SBS

Fairfax Media’s Saturday supplement – The Good Weekend – is on the lookout for a new editor after incumbent, Ben Naparstek, decided to join SBS as its new head of editorial, online and emerging platforms.

Naparstek famously took the reins of the upmarket broadsheet insert in February 2012 aged just 25. He moved to Fairfax after editing The Monthly; getting the nod in front of some more fancied candidates.

His move to SBS reportedly has nothing to do with last week’s controversy where Australian actress Caitlin Stasey claimed she’d been asked by The Good Weekend to pose in her underwear.

At the time of writing Fairfax Media had not named a replacement.

In a statement, SBS said Naparsek’s new role will “responsible for the overall editorial strategy for the SBS online network” including commissioning and acquiring content and overseeing the development, production and publishing of content across the SBS websites”.

SBS director of TV and online, Marshall Heald, said of the appointment: “We’re thrilled to have Ben come on board in this important role as we continue to push the boundaries and explore new ways to bring SBS content to life online, and deliver on our Charter in new and innovative ways. Ben brings some impressive experience to the position, as well as a clear commitment to producing high quality content and finding new ways to engage with audiences in a competitive media landscape. We welcome him to the team.”

Naparstek said: “While I’m sad to leave Fairfax, I’m thrilled to be joining an organisation that’s at the cutting edge of digital innovation while serving the nation’s diverse communities with first-rate journalism. This is an exciting time for SBS, and I look forward to maximising the audience for the network, across different platforms and devices, by experimenting with new ways of telling and delivering great stories.”

Naparstek is set to move to SBS next month.
