Getty Images Reaffirms Support Of Visa pour l’Image

Getty Images, a world leader in visual communication, has confirmed its presence at Visa pour l’Image, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to supporting photojournalism and nurturing emerging talent.

This is the ninth year that Getty Images is sponsoring the prestigious photojournalism festival, now in its 28 year, as part of its dedication to the photojournalism industry and commitment to producing powerful content. The festival, which takes place annually in Perpignan, France, will be a celebration of the previous year’s editorial coverage, captured by the world’s very best photographic talent.

At this year’s festival, Getty Images Reportage photojournalist Juan Arredondo, will receive the coveted ICRC Humanitarian Visa d’or award for his comprehensive report on the child soldiers of Colombia – anarmy of an estimated 6000 young men and women who are enlisted in illegal armed groups. This stunning body of work focuses on the females within the group – some as young as nine – who not only fight as soldiers, but are also victims of sexual abuse at the hands of their commanders. Juan is a previous recipient of the Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography programme and used his grant funding for this project, enabling him to further evolve and uncover this unprecedented story.

Getty Images will also be announcing the recipients of its 2016 Grants for Editorial Photography programme on the ground, which showcases and supports powerful and inspiring photojournalism projects – a programme that, since its inception in 2004, has awarded over US$1.3 million to photographers around the world. Judged by industry greats, including Sarah Leen, Director of Photography for National Geographic, the grants offer photographers the financial freedom to uncover stories of personal and journalistic significance, which would have otherwise remained unseen.

Getty Images Vice President, Photo Assignments, Editorial Partnerships and Development, Aidan Sullivan says: “Getty Images Reportage is renowned for defining seminal photojournalism – imagery that moves the world and commands attention, highlighting important stories and events. We are incredibly proud of not only Juan’s exclusive win, but of our entire roster of award-winning photojournalists who consistently receive international acclaim for their inspirational work.”

Getty Images photojournalist, Brent Stirton, will also be exhibiting his award-winning Ivory Wars project at the festival, assigned by National Geographic. The moving reportage explores the relentless violence of poachers who hunt Africa’s endangered elephants for ivory, as well as the effect this has on the surrounding community, whilst also showcasing the bravery of those working to protect the animals.

In addition, Getty Images will have a strong presence at the festival through screenings of photographers’ work, as well as daily portfolio review sessions conducted by the Getty Images team in the Palais des Congres.
