Fairfax Media Gets Behind The Tech Girls Movement For International Women’s Day

Fairfax Media today joined the Tech Girls Movement to celebrate International Women’s Day and launch the ‘2016 Tech Girls Are Superheroes’ campaign at an event held at Google Australia offices in Sydney.

Fairfax Media, Google Australia, Digital Careers, Women in Technology and the Queensland University of Technology are sponsors of the Tech Girls Movement – a non-profit which promotes the opportunities afforded by technology careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) through storytelling.

Fairfax Media chief information officer, Robyn Elliott, said, “We are focused on fostering a more diverse and equal workforce across all parts of our business, particularly in technology. Diversity brings innovation and creativity which ultimately drives better decision making and leads to improved company performance.

“By supporting Tech Girls Movement we have the opportunity to connect with and inspire the next generation of technology leaders. We are excited to be part of the initiative.”

The second edition of the Tech Girls Are Superheroes book will be released today to coincide with the launch of the 2016 campaign. The new book follows the success of the first edition released in 2014 which has been distributed free to more than 20,000 school students across Australia.

Tech Girls Movement founder, Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen, said, “There are a lack of visible female role models and a severe lack of understanding of what careers are out there. The book presents real life accessible role models to show the variety of innovative, challenging and interesting careers in STEM.”

Google Australia engineering community and outreach manager, Sally-Ann Williams, added, “It’s important that we introduce girls to computer science and coding early to overcome stereotypes that exist.

“The Tech Girls Are Superheroes campaign provides visible role models for young girls and a fantastic program to excite and equip them with the skills and experience they need for their future. We’re thrilled to help expand this program in Australia.”

Returning this year is the ‘Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero’ – a national competition for Australian female students which challenges participants to build an app prototype that will make their community a better place. The winning team has the chance to fly to San Francisco to attend Silicon Valley’s global Technovation app pitch challenge.
