Fairfax Journalists Might Strike Ahead Of Forced Redundancies

Ahead of a round of forced redundancies at Fairfax, employees have held stop-work meetings and are considering strike action this week.

News Corp publication is reporting that Fairfax is cutting 150 jobs from its Metro Media division by May 2016. Fairfax’s Metro Media publications include The Australian Financial ReviewThe Sydney Morning Herald and The Age

The redundancies also including the merging of Drive.com.au website with The Motor Report. It means a number of Drive’s editorial team face redundancies, with the plan understood to involve some of the employees being offered short-term contracts to help bed down the joint venture.

Last month at Fairfax’s annual general meeting chief executive Greg Hywood said: “Structural changes in the publishing business are continuing and print advertising weakness in the first half has necessitated additional cost reductions across the business.”

Last week, B&T reported News Corp Australia would also be cutting around 55 editorial roles including staff from The Australian, The Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun.
