Facebook is banning all ads that promise a cure to coronavirus (Covid-19) or attempt to sensationalise the situation.
In a statement first given to Business Insider, the social media platform outlined the next steps, which follow previous efforts to remove misinformation about the disease on the platform.
“We recently implemented a policy to prohibit ads that refer to the coronavirus and create a sense of urgency, like implying a limited supply, or guaranteeing a cure or prevention. We also have policies for surfaces like Marketplace that prohibit similar behavior.”
Facebook gave the example of face masks that to 100% guarantee to prevent the spread of the virus.
The social media platform has also been forced to cancel its marketing conference in San Francisco.
Amazon, meanwhile, is dealing with suppliers attempting to ‘price gouge’ medical face masks.
While the marketplace requires sellers to follow its Fair Pricing Policy, reports in WIRED reveal Amazon has alerted merchants about face masks that are “not in compliance” with the protocols.
One user on the Amazon services seller forums stated that while a pack of 50 face masks usually costs “about 10 bucks, perhaps 20 with shipping”, sellers are now asking $19 for a pack with $150 shipping.
