A tech-savvy Reddit user has gone to the extreme length of creating an algorithmically-generated version of Sir David Attenborough’s voice and getting it to read relationship advice.
Software developer Garett MacGowan is responsible for the hilarious YouTube channel, which now automatically scrapes text from Reddit posts from r/Relationships and r/AskReddit and posts Attenborough’s voice reading the various relationship questions and advice.
After creating the fake voice by merging different open source libraries together in Python, MacGowan scraped Reddit’s API to provide the text.
You can see one of the videos here.
As hilarious as the videos are, they are also extremely believable – highlighting just how dangerous this ‘deep fake’ technology can be in the world of fake news.
MacGowan said he hopes the videos can help educate people on just how powerful this technology can be.
“I wanted to show people what is possible with machine learning because it is one of my biggest passions,” MacGowan told Motherboard.
“Things like this can be used in both positive and negative ways. Our best defense against the misuse of these technologies is to educate the public about their existence. It will not be very long until these fakes are indistinguishable to an unaided person.”
