Coming Soon: Johnnie Walker Out Of A Paper Bottle

Diaego, the company behind whisky brand Johnnie Walker, has created the world’s first 100 per cent plastic free paper-based spirits bottle.

The bottles, made entirely from sustainably sourced wood,  will launch next year with Johnnie Walker whisky.

It comes as part of a partnership between Diageo and venture management company Pilot Lite to launch Pulpex Limited, a new sustainable packaging technology company.

The technology allows manufacturers to create plastic-free, single mould bottles that can be used across a range of consumer goods and as been designed to contain a variety of liquid products.

“We’re proud to have created this world first,” Diageo’s chief sustainability officer, Ewan Andrew, said in a press release.

“We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking.

“It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”

Pulpex Limited has also established a partner consortium with major FMCG companies including Unilever, and PepsiCo.

Unilever and PepsiCo are both planning on launching their own branded paper bottles using Pulpex Limited technology in 2021.

Pilot Lite director Sandy Westwater said: “We’re thrilled to be working with global brand leaders in this consortium. By working together, we can use the collective power of the brands to help minimise the environmental footprint of packaging by changing manufacturing and consumer behaviours.”
