Today the Art Gallery of New South Wales opens Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium with the support of Clemenger BBDO Sydney, proud major partner of the exhibition.
The Mapplethorpe exhibition celebrates one of the most renowned photographers of the 20th century, an artist who understood the medium’s ability to alter perceptions and push boundaries.
This comprehensive survey of Robert Mapplethorpe’s career features over 200 works, including floral still lifes, portraits and figure studies that chart his involvement in New York’s gay scene, as well as a selection of archival material providing insights into his working methods and life.
An icon who photographed other icons, Mapplethorpe captured and shaped an era with portraits that immortalised the cultural idols of the 1970s and 1980s, including lifelong muse Patti Smith, fellow artists Cindy Sherman and Louise Bourgeois.
This is the second important exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW that Clemenger BBDO Sydney has supported. Last year the agency was a major sponsor of Adman: Warhol before pop.
John Richardson, Director of Development, Art Gallery of New South Wales said the Gallery was thrilled to partner with Clemenger BBDO for Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium.
“The Gallery’s partnership with Clemenger BBDO for Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium, as well as for Adman: Warhol before pop earlier in the year is the perfect fit,” Richardson said.
“We’re extremely grateful for the generous support of Clemenger BBDO in assisting the Gallery to host important exhibitions of groundbreaking artists such as Mapplethorpe and Warhol and we warmly welcome all the Clemenger BBDO community to the gallery to view this extraordinary Mapplethorpe exhibition.”
Ben Coulson, Chief Creative Officer, Clemenger BBDO Sydney says: “We are very proud to partner with the Gallery to help bring these important exhibitions to Australia. Iconic art like the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe has a vital contribution to culture, and it helps shape the creativity we apply in our industry. Bringing people closer to famous contemporary artists and their work is a good thing. I hope you all get the chance check out this thought provoking work”.
The exhibition opens to the public today and runs until the 4th March 2018.
