Cinema’s Blockbuster Year Starts With Record Box Office

2015 is already living up to the expectation of an outstanding year for cinema, with box office for the first two weeks of 2015 up 18% year on year, marking the highest start to the year on record.

Over $40m was spent on movie tickets across each of the first two weeks of 2015; the exceptional opening even surpasses levels recorded in 2010, when Avatar redefined box office records globally.

The remarkable start to the year has been driven by a diverse range of films, including The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, The Imitation Game, Penguins of Madagascar, Taken 3, The Water Diviner and Big Hero 6 among many others.

Daniel Hill, Managing Director of Val Morgan commented, “We expected 2015 to be a record year so this is a terrific start for our advertisers. The unprecedented line up of blockbuster titles ahead is very exciting. In the next month alone we have Kingsman: The Secret Service, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Alongside delivering the best in entertainment, cinema provides a unique environment for advertising cut through.”

Other titles releasing from March include Cinderella, Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World and Ted 2 – all in cinemas before the end of June.
