Global box office sales reached an all-time record of $36.4 billion in 2014. These figures, compiled by Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), are based on global box office receipts for all films released around the world.
Australia ranked the 9th highest international market, with an annual box office haul of $1 billion last year and the highest spend per capita on movie tickets across the top markets.
Growth was driven primarily by the Asia Pacific region (+12%). Chinese box office increased by 34% to $4.8 billion to become the first international market outside the US and Canada to exceed $4 billion in the box office ticket sales.
The number of cinema screens increased by 6% worldwide in 2014 to over 142,000 due largely to the Asia Pacific region (+15%).
Daniel Hill, managing director of Val Morgan commented, “The strength of the global cinema landscape is evidence that movies have a huge influence on consumers and consumer culture. On the back of these exceptional figures, 2015 is shaping up to be the record year that we expected driven by a strong and diverse cinema release slate. Year to date Australian box office is up 18%, which is great news for our advertisers, as other media continue to fragment.”
