Can’t Have A Party? Have A Netflix Party Instead

CHIANG MAI ,THAILAND - March 31, 2018 : Close up Netflix website in laptop screen. Netflix being popular internationally.

As movie cinemas close in Australia and social distancing becomes the new norm, web users are looking for ways to stay connected with their friends and loved ones.

As it turns out, there is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to watch your favourite shows or movies with your friends, without actually being with them.

‘Netflix Party’ allows users to simultaneously stream content on the video streaming platform, with anyone in the group able to pause, rewind or fast forward.

This means everyone is always on the same time frame.

According to the Google Chrome website, Netflix Party is “a Chrome extension for watching Netflix remotely with friends, e.g., for movie nights with that long-distance special someone. It synchronizes video playback and adds group chat.”

As many businesses around the world struggle with the current conditions, Netflix is currently seeing an influx of activity.

So much so, the company has been forced to reduce the streaming quality in Europe for 30 days to deal with the increased demand.

Making the announcement last week, Netflix said the move would reduce data consumption by 25 per cent.

“Following the discussions between Commissioner Thierry Breton and [Netflix chief executive] Reed Hastings, and given the extraordinary challenges raised by the coronavirus, Netflix has decided to begin reducing bitrates across all our streams in Europe for 30 days,” the company said.

It is yet to be seen whether or not Netflix will extend this measure to other regions.

In Australia, Telstra boss Andy Penn last week recommended internet users consider dividing usage throughout the day to ease the strain on the network.
