Back in 2010, a young Californian student by the name of Jeremy Sturdivant found a deal that offered him 10,000 bitcoins in exchange for two large pizzas.
Sturdivant took advantage of the deal and promptly cashed in his new cryptocurrency wealth for travelling.
If he had held on to the 10,000 bitcoins, however, he’d today be sitting on a fortune worth around $500 million.
To commemorate his misfortune, the crypto community has been celebrating ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’ in recent years, which falls on 22 May.
In Australia, digital assets exchange BTC Markets has partnered with The Salvation Army Melbourne and Domino’s Pizza Flinders Street to provide pizza to homeless services across Melbourne.
Caroline Bowler, CEO of BTC Markets said: “We are really excited about this partnership with The Salvation Army and Domino’s Pizza. As a company, it’s important to us that we get involved and give back to our local communities, particularly to those who are most vulnerable.
“Bitcoin, and cryptocurrencies in general, has given many Australians a new avenue for growing their wealth. Through this initiative, we want to share a message that parts of our community lack access to the opportunities that we do, so we must help out in all the ways we can.”
Major Brendan Nottle from The Salvation Army Melbourne said: “The Salvation Army Melbourne- Project 614 works with Melbourne’s most vulnerable community members, including those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Each night we serve hundreds of free hot meals from the Magpie Nest Cafe. There is nothing better than a slice of pizza on a cold Melbourne night and we’re really grateful to BTC Markets and Domino’s Pizza for adding something special to our meals this week.”
