#BoycottWoolworths Was Trending Number One On Twitter For Controversial News Corp Partnership

Despite the US election a major point of discussion on Twitter, the hashtag #BoycottWoolworths managed to hit the number one trending spot in Australia on Thursday thanks to its controversial partnerships with Murdoch-owned News Corp.

The supermarket giant has joined forces with News Corp on a new campaign to give thanks to people who have stepped up in 2020.

Woolworths announced the partnership on LinkedIn, with CEO Brad Banducci saying: “We are proud to partner with News Corp to celebrate the human stories of 2020 with Thanks A Million, and I encourage you to nominate the people who you think deserve to be thanked.

“The Thanks a Million program has been developed to thank everyone who has gone the extra mile – be it in response to the bushfires, Covid 19 and other events which have made this such a challenging year.”

The Woolworths and News Corp partnership comes amid ex-PM Kevin Rudd’s petition to launch a Royal Commission into the Murdoch Media, which has so far reached a record half a million signatures.

The petition to parliament has surpassed the popularity of Australia’s previous biggest, a 2019 demand for a climate emergency to be declared that was presented to parliament.
