Sonic The Hedgehog had a strong weekend debut, opening to 278,118 Aussies and accumulating $3,853,387 at the box office.

According to Val Morgan, it is the fourth biggest opening weekend of the year so far, and is the top move for all age groups under 54 years.

In second spot was Birds of Prey – a favourite on Valentine’s Day Friday, which saw a +14 per cent uplift compared to the Friday prior. It is the number one among the 25-29 audience, but still ranks highly in second spot across all under 54 years.

1917 is consistently performing strongly every week, with minimal week on week reductions. It is the first title of the year to reach $20M at the box office, retaining its position as the highest grossing title of 2020 to date.

Fantasy Island is a strong title for under 40 years, and posted just over one million on opening weekend.

Emma also debuted last weekend to the tune of $1.07 million, performing strongly for older audiences P55+.

Meanwhile, Parasite re-enters the box office ranks after its historic win at the 92nd Academy Awards last week, coming in 7th with $743K box office, which is about a 400 per cent uplift vs past weekend.

Fun fact: Parasite is the 12th foreign language film to ever be nominated for Best Picture, and the first to ever succeed.
