Topdeck turns to Instagram and Google+ as 'millions' leave Facebook

As Gen Y abandons Facebook “in the millions” Topdeck Travel has turned to its snap-happy platform Instagram and Google+ for its latest campaign.

The travel company has recruited nine of the world’s most powerful heavyweight social snappers and Google+ influencers on an ‘instajourney’ of the Northern Territory and east coast.

The chosen snappers, who come from as far afield as Brazil and Sweden, will snag, tag and share their experiences. According to the release the youth brand will reach more than five million people every time a picture is posted.

Mike Doyle, Topdeck Travel marketing manager, said travel brands are turning to Instagram to spark interest in school-leavers and 20-somethings.

“Topdeck’s instajourney superstars have a larger audience than prime time TV shows like X Factor and deliver fresh, inspiring content to the palm of your hand,” he said.

“Young travellers, especially young women, are looking for authentic travel experiences, and platforms like Instagram offer a creative way to showcase these as they happen.”

He said the focus on Instagram and Google+ heavyweights come after reports that Gen Y users are "abandoning Facebook in the millions".

The campaign, dubbed ‘The Big Aus’ trip, will be one of the biggest ‘instameets’ or meeting of popular Instagrammers in terms of combined follower reach.
