The Biennale of Sydney and longstanding exhibition partner Artspace today announced renowned artist Khaled Sabsabi will join the Biennale of Sydney Board of Directors, retiring from Artspace’s Board.

Chairman of the Biennale of Sydney, Kate Mills said: ‘With an extensive international career and a commitment to enhancing Australia’s arts ecology, Khaled Sabsabi will bring exceptional industry knowledge and expertise to the Biennale of Sydney.”

“As a distinguished contemporary artist, Khaled is a Biennale of Sydney alumni and has exhibited in the Biennale on two occasions, showcasing his work at the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018) and the 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012). We are thrilled to welcome Khaled Sabsabi to Biennale of Sydney’s Board of Directors.’

Executive Director at Artspace, Alexie Glass-Kantor said: ‘Artspace is extremely grateful for Khaled Sabsabi’s contribution to our Board over the past four years. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with the Biennale of Sydney as Khaled commences his new role with our established exhibition partner.’

Khaled Sabsabi said: ‘As an artist and cultural practitioner, I make work that is in continual transfer from the local to the global with a devotion to social and cultural inclusiveness and access. As a member of the Biennale Board, I look forward to strengthening the Biennale’s engagement with audiences and artists in wider Sydney, Australia and abroad. I am excited to be working with an organisation that is deeply committed to ensuring the most dynamic contemporary art from Australia and around the world is accessible to all, and I am keen to share my experience and to advocate for the many voices of artists.’

Khaled Sabsabi is an acclaimed contemporary artist who works across borders, cultures and disciplines. He has exhibited in over 80 solo and group exhibitions in Australia and internationally, showcasing his work in the 9th Shanghai Biennale (2012), Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013), 5th Marrakech Biennale (2014), 1st Yinchuan Biennale (2016), 3rd Kochi Muziris Biennale (2016) and Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art (2018).

Sabsabi was awarded the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship (2010), 60th Blake Prize (2011) and the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Arts Fellowship (2015). Sabsabi migrated from Tripoli, Lebanon to Australia as a child in 1977. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales.

The 23rd Biennale of Sydney (2022) will be curated by Artistic Director José Roca and a team of local curators (The Curatorium) and will be presented free of charge from 12 March to 13 June 2022.
