Apple Fined Over $12m In France Over App Store Ad Personalisation

Apple has been fined €8 million (more than $12 million AUD) by French privacy watchdog CNIL over ad personalisation in its App Store.

The CNIL said in a statement that “the advertising targeting settings available from the ‘Settings’ icon of the iPhone were pre-checked by default,” despite those settings not being strictly necessary for the device’s functioning.

The privacy group noted that while the case dates back to 2021, it related to an older version of iOS rather than the most up-to-date version.

The group that brought the case argued that on iOS 14, Apple had failed to appropriately ask users for their prior consent to allow installed apps to gather key identifying information for targeted adverts.

Apple, meanwhile, said that it was “disappointed” with the decision and that it would file an appeal.

The Cupertino-based company prides itself on its privacy chops concerned to Google’s rival Android operating system. In fact, Apple has regularly created advertising campaigns based off its supposed privacy advantage.
