Following the current advertising trend of normalising the female reproductive system, American tampon company Tampax has partnered with comedian Amy Schumer to teach women how to properly insert a tampon.
It’s been a while since we learnt sex ed, but from memory, while we were taught how to put a condom on a banana, how to insert a tampon was never on the agenda.
That’s why this new Tampax campaign is so marvellous – it is both hilarious and educational, while also normalising the words period, vagina and tampon.
“It took me years before I understood that you’re supposed to press it in all the way in until you don’t feel it,” she told Refinery29 in a recent interview.
In the funny ad for the brand, Schumer went to a shopping centre in the US to ask women (and a group of men) how to insert a tampon, and what they knew about vaginas and periods.

“Did you ever hear that myth that using a tampon is the same as losing your virginity?” she asked a group of young women.
“It’s kind of like, peeing yourself, right?” one of the young blokes says about periods. Not quite, buddy.
The campaign, created by Saatchi & Saatchi NY, not only tickles the funny bone but likewise is educational and normalises a very, well – normal – female experience.
