America’s Sporting News Comes Down Under

Sporting News, the iconic American sports editorial brand since 1886, is going global, with Australia the first staging post for a new network of multi-sports destinations.

Backed by Perform, the global media and content supplier, Sporting News will harness the best of Sportal – the Perform-owned Australian sports website – with a host of exciting new features and innovations, including greater access to global sports, in-depth coverage of Australian sports and exclusive interviews.

Mobile-first, video-first, social-first, Sporting News will use the sharpest digital storytelling tools to evolve narratives and fuel conversations among fans.

The fully responsive site goes live on all platforms – mobile, desktop and tablet – from the start of December 2015.

“Sporting News is a forceful, independent and free news and views service,” said Alex Peebles, general manager of Perform Australia and New Zealand.

“We are eager to welcome the title to Australia, to provide sports fans with a new and unique perspective into what lurks beneath the surface of our nation’s sporting obsessions.”

AFL and NRL lie at the heart of the content but Sporting News’ unique position as part of a global network of portals will mean access to a range of expertise in other sports, specifically US-based sports, which have seen a sharp rise in interest this year as more Australian stars shine in America.

Of particular interest, Sporting News will be home to weekly live and free NBA matches, along with basketball coverage focused on Australian players such as Andrew Bogut and Matthew Dellavedova

“Sporting News will cover all major sports in Australia and beyond, together with major events such as Olympics,” said Graham Shaw, general manager, Perform Media Portals.

“With an enhanced local team, we are excited to expand our global network with the introduction of Sporting News Australia. Sportal has developed a strong and loyal sporting fan base and we are thrilled to provide our growing audience with innovative and relevant coverage of Australian and International sports.”

Perform also operates Opta – a market leader in sports data. Opta will be used as an analysis tool for SN experts in cricket, rugby and soccer, giving users unique content and statistics to help them uncover every key facet of their favourite game.
