Fury Over “Repulsive” Melbourne Real Estate Ad That Threatened To Set Rottweilers On Late Rent Payers

Fury Over “Repulsive” Melbourne Real Estate Ad That Threatened To Set Rottweilers On Late Rent Payers

A Melbourne real estate agency has done nothing for the reputation of agents after it unveiled an ad that threatened to set Rottweilers on late rent payers.

The ad is the work of Only Estate Agents in Narre Warren in Melbourne’s south-east and was immediately slammed as “irresponsible, reprehensible and utterly repulsive”.

The campaign features an Only employee standing next to the two dogs named Bruce and Gary. It comes with tagline, “Here’s 2 reasons we’ll get your rent on time”.

Only has since deleted the ad from its social media, while the business’ owner, Khalid Sarwari, apologised for the ad while defending it as “tongue in cheek”.

As you’d expect, the social media reaction to the idea of late rent payers being mauled by two aggressive dogs was swift and loud.

“This is all kinds of wrong,” tweeted one person. “Renters are not ‘criminals’ who require illegal standover tactics to pay rent,” said another. While others came out in support of Bruce and Gary. “Rotties are beautiful loveable animals, not attack dogs,” wrote a Rottweiler fan.

Even RSPCA Queensland joined in the twitter storm, adding: “Both puppers just want to be good doggos!”

Rental advocacy group Tenants Union Victoria described the campaign as “infuriating”. It tweeted: “A lease is an amicable agreement by two parties, not a ransom. It is inappropriate to discriminate against renters in this way and entirely unnecessary to approach these situations with intimidation and force.”
