Campaign: Newspaper Works Celebrates Aussie Recyclers

The Newspaper Works will tomorrow launch a national print and digital advertising campaign congratulating Australians for achieving one of the best newsprint recycling rates in the world.

The campaign, titled ‘The trees are hugging back’ and developed for The Newspaper Works’ Environmental Advisory Group, features scientist and media personality Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki. It thanks Australians for embracing household recycling and highlights that print newspapers and magazines in Australia are produced using recycled fibres and sustainably managed forests.

“Around 25 million1 newspapers are in circulation in Australia every week, so our readers’ efforts nationally to recycle newsprint is significant. Initiatives of the Environmental Advisory Group are also another example of the ongoing collaboration between newspaper publishers across a variety of industry-wide initiatives,” The Newspaper Works Chief Executive Officer Mark Hollands said.

“As a result of public education and curb-side recycling programs, Australia’s newspaper recycling rate is one of the best in the world, with 78%2 of newsprint being recycled. We felt that this effort deserves recognition and is an opportunity to highlight the importance of our ongoing environmental responsibility, which is something the industry takes very seriously,” The Newspaper Works Executive Director – Environment, Peter Netchaef said.

The campaign will run for nine weeks in magazines and metropolitan, suburban and regional newspapers across print and digital formats. Participating publishers are News Corp Australia, Fairfax Media, APN News and Media, West Australian Newspapers, Pacific Magazines and Bauer Media titles.

Formed in 1990 to advance newsprint recycling and improve product stewardship, The Newspaper Works’ Environmental Advisory Group represents Australia’s leading newspaper and magazine publishers.

The creative was produced in-house by The Newspaper Works’ Head of Design Camila Carmody.
