Nurses turn electric
The Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) and the RACV have teamed up as part of a green motoring initiative and will see nurses making their home visits in electric cars.
The project saw eight electric Nissan Leafs join the RDNS fleet this morning. The ribbon was cut by a 91-year-old former RDNS nurse, and one of the Nissan Leafs and a historic Ford Prefect (which was driven by nurses in 1951) will depart together in celebration.
RACV deputy chairman Kevin White said the major partnership drives green motoring and mobile medical care well into the 21st century.
“It is a great fit for RACV and RDNS. Today, our organisations are modern and progressive ones, with a combined history of more than 200 years in proudly supporting the Victorian community,” White said.
“As part of this partnership, RACV has provided these vehicles and 100 per cent green-powered charging infrastructure.”
The trial of these electric cars will help determine whether they can be of future use as part of the key float and will allow the community to better understand the role electric cars can play in their lives.
RDNS chief executive Stephen Muggleton said he was delighted to be working in partnership with RACV. The two year trial of the electric cars embraces RDNS’s philosophy regarding sustainability and innovation.
Muggleton said the trial would seek to understand the benefits, cost effectiveness and overall viability of electric vehicles within a fleet environment.
The cars will work from the RDNS Box Hill and Altona sites in Victoria where green energy stations have been located to charge the vehicles.
